Course Listings

Grade 9

AVI 1OI

This course is exploratory in nature, offering an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials by using a range of media, processes, techniques, and styles. Students will use the creative and critical analysis processes and will interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context.

For students in the Fast Forward Program.

The elements and principles of design in Art, stylistic approaches to Art and unique media will be studied throughout the course. Applications of new technology will be integrated throughout the course. Students will individually develop a unique independent summative artwork to demonstrate their learning at the conclusion of the course.

Grade 10

AVI 2OI

This course enables students to develop their skills in producing and presenting art by introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic exploration and experimentation. Students will apply the elements and principles of design when exploring the creative process. Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect on and interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context.

Grade 11 Open Art

AVI 3OI

This course is intended for students with no prior experience. This course will focus on personally expressive studio activities such as drawing, painting, mixed media, pottery, collage as well as digital art forms. Students will develop a creative understanding of the elements and principles of design in Art and focus on an independently curated final artwork of their choice

Grade 11 Visual Arts

AVI 3MI

This course enables students to further develop their knowledge and skills in advanced studio techniques in visual arts. Students will use the creative process to explore a wide range of themes that may include drawing, painting, sculpting, and printmaking, creation of collage, multimedia works, and works using emergent technologies. Students will develop a personal portfolio and complete and personally expressive summative artwork.

Grade 11 IB Art

Grade 11 Photography

AWQ 3OI

Black and white traditional photography using 35 mm cameras will be explored. Use of the camera – traditional and digital, composition, depth of field, special effects, studio portraits and photo history are studied. Digital photography using Photoshop and In Design will be integrated throughout the units. The enhancement fee is $60.

 

Grade 11 Graphic Design

AWS3MI

This course is an introduction to computer graphics. Adobe creative suite with Photoshop, In Design and Illustrator, will be introduced. Proper use of digital photography as it relates to computer graphics will also be integrated. Graphic composition, logo design, commercial illustration, and community-based art projects will be studied.

 

Grade 11 Non-Traditional Art

AWT 3OB

For students in the Fast Forward Program

In this course, students will explore various media such as painting, clay, printmaking and other three-dimensional art forms in the Art studio. Emphasis is given to creating functional art. Drawing skills are not essential.

 

Grade 12 Exploring the Arts

AEA 4OB

For students in the Fast Forward Program

This course is a continuation of AWT3OB. Emphasis is given to creating arts and crafts that are functional. Practical skills such as colour theory, acrylic painting, pottery, printmaking and mixed media and design are all skills that can be developed beyond a high school level. Drawing skills are not essential.

 

Grade 12 Visual Arts

AVI 4MI

This course focuses on enabling students to refine their use of the creative process when creating and presenting two- and three-dimensional artworks using a variety of traditional and emerging media and technologies. The studio program enables students to explore a range of materials, processes, and techniques that can be applied to their own art production. Students will also make connections between various works of art in personal, contemporary, historical and cultural contexts.

 

Grade 12 IB Art

Grade 12 Photography

AWQ 4MI

This course focuses on the refinement of photographic skills using SLR traditional and digital cameras. Darkroom effects, studio lighting, and Photoshop will be used to produce professional portraits, still life compositions and portfolio pieces. The enhancement fee is $30.

 

Grade 12 Graphic Design

AWS 4MI

This course will further develop the skills necessary to produce professional-looking graphics for a portfolio. Adobe Creative Suite and SLR digital photography will be used at an advanced level. School and community projects will also be professionally created and printed in the studio using professional technologies, software, and media.
