Welcome to the Art Department.
This course is exploratory in nature, offering an overview of visual arts as a foundation
for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of
design and the expressive qualities of various materials by using a range of media,
processes, techniques, and styles. Students will use the creative and critical analysis
processes and will interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and history context.
For students in the Fast Forward Program
This course will integrate dramatic arts, music and visual arts. Students will learn
specialized arts vocabulary while investigating traditional concepts as they build skills to
produce a summative musical/dramatic performance. Elements and principles unique to
the various arts as well as applications of new technology will be integrated throughout
This course enables students to develop their skills in producing and presenting art by
introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic exploration and
experimentation. Students will apply the elements and principles of design when
exploring the creative process. Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect
on and interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context.
Enhancement fee is $15.00.
Grade 10 Drawing
This course emphasizes learning through practice and experimentation. Students
practice drawing skills using pencil, charcoal and pastels. It stresses studio and
technique. A higher level of drawing talent is expected. A sketchbook is required.

Grade 11 Visual Arts
This course enables students to further develop their knowledge and skills in visual arts.
Students will use the creative process to explore a wide range of themes that may
include drawing, painting, sculpting, and printmaking, creation of collage, multimedia
works, and works using emergent technologies. The course may be delivered as a
comprehensive program or through a program focused on a particular art form (e.g.
photography, video, computer graphics, information design). Enhancement fee is
Grade 11 Photography
Black and white traditional photography using 35 mm cameras will be explored. Use of
the camera – traditional and digital, composition, depth of field, special effects, studio
portraits and photo history are studied. Digital photography using Photoshop and In
Design will be integrated throughout the units. Enhancement fee is $90.
Grade 11 Graphic Design
This course is an introduction to computer graphics. Photoshop, In Design, Corel Draw
and Illustrator will be introduced. Proper use of digital photography as it relates to
computer graphic will also be integrated. Graphic composition, logo design, commercial
illustration and brochure development will be studied. Enhancement fee is $20.00.
Grade 11 Non Traditional Art
In this course, students will explore various media such as painting, clay, printmaking
and other three dimensional art forms. Emphasis is given to creating arts and crafts that
are functional. Drawing skills are not essential. Enhancement fee is $20.00
Grade 12 Exploring the Arts
For students in the Fast Forward Program
This course is a continuation of AWT3OB. Emphasis is given to creating arts and crafts
that are functional. Practical skills such as colour theory, acrylic painting, pottery, print
making, jewellery making are all skills that can be developed beyond a high school level.
Drawing skills are not essential. Enhancement fee is $20.00
Grade 12 Visual Arts
This course focuses on enabling students to refine their use of the creative process
when creating and presenting two- and three-dimensional art works using a variety of
traditional and emerging media and technologies. The studio program enables students
to explore a range of materials, processes, and techniques that can be applied to their
own art production. Students will also make connections between various works of art in
personal, contemporary, historical and cultural contexts. Enhancement fee is $30.00
Grade 12 Photography
This course focuses on the refinement of photographic skills using SLR traditional and
digital cameras. Darkroom effects, studio lighting and Photoshop will be used to
produce professional portraits, still life compositions and portfolio pieces. Enhancement
fee is $90.
Grade 12 Graphic Design
This course will further develop the skills necessary to produce professional looking
graphics for a portfolio. Photoshop, In Design, Corel Draw, Illustrator and SLR digital
photography will be used. School and community projects will also be professionally
created and printed. Enhancement fee is $20.00
Grade 12 Yearbook
This course is in applied journalism. The students are responsible for the production
of the yearbook. Students will develop practical skills in layout and design, research and
writing, computer skills using industry standard applications and marketing.
NOTE: Students may take only three (3) IDC courses for credit
Grade 12 Yearbook Advanced
Students may be interviewed to stay at this level as the students selected will be the editors for the IDC 4OI course which produces the yearbook. NOTE: Students may take only three IDC courses for credit. Students may not get 2 credits for IDC 4OI and IDC 4UI.
