IB Student

Husayn Jamal

When Husayn Jamal first started his high school journey over four years ago, he was unsure what he wanted to do in the future. Husayn enrolled in Cameron Heights’ International Baccalaureate (IB) programme where he was exposed to new ideas and experiences that expanded his possibilities. Today, Husayn is in his first year at McGill University where he is pursuing a joint Honours degree in Political Science and International Development Studies.

The IB programme is an expanded curriculum that encourages students to pursue their interests, develop skills for the future and inspire global citizenship. This is a unique program offered at two of our secondary schools; Cameron Heights and Glenview Park.

Students, like Husayn, develop critical thinking and independent learning skills that prepare them for their university journey. IB is a qualification recognized by universities around the world, and many Ontario universities offer IB students up to five first-year transfer credits. In fact, retention rates in university are higher for IB students than for students with a traditional high school diploma. Husayn felt well prepared to take on the academic challenge of University.

“The skills I learned in the IB Programme have been invaluable at McGill. Beyond just time management, and essay writing skills, the IB taught me how to evaluate information and think critically about the content I learn in my [university] courses.”

The IB programme is suited for motivated students. IB students share a curiosity and commitment to learning in and outside of the classroom. Husayn experienced a real sense of belonging with his peers and felt like he truly fit in.

“During my time in the IB Programme, I made truly lifelong friendships with my peers through our shared interests in academic pursuits as well as a common passion for world issues, Model United Nations, politics, and law. Being part of a community with motivated and like-minded students pushed me to go outside my comfort zone and develop more as a leader in the community.”

Part of the IB curriculum includes creating meaningful experiences beyond the classroom setting. Students are involved in a variety of extracurricular activities and community service to encourage learning through experience. Husayn was inspired to study politics and international issues because of the Creative, Activity, Service (CAS) component of the program.

“CAS had me explore more creative pursuits and encouraged me to volunteer more in the community at St. Mary’s General Hospital and the Child Witness Centre.”

Husayn is just one on thousands of students who have had their high school experience enriched from the IB programme.  If you think your child would benefit from this program please join us at one of our Grade 8 information nights to learn more.
