Early this past Sunday morning, 49 people were killed in an attack on a gay night club in Orlando, Florida. Those 49 people were spending time with friends, in a place where they felt safe to be themselves. As an organization, the Waterloo Region District School Board is profoundly saddened by this hate motivated crime that targeted the LGBTQ community. This event reminds us of the importance of our collective efforts in eliminating discrimination and promoting and protecting human rights. As individuals our thoughts and feelings are with the victims and their families.

Our flag will be lowered to half-mast for the remainder of the week as a visual expression of our sympathy for the victims. Tomorrow, a pride flag will be raised to half-mast at the Education Centre. The flag will fly for the rest of June. Thursday, please show Glenview’s solidarity with the LGBTQ community by wearing purple.
