Course Offerings
HIF1OI Exploring Family Studies
This course explores, within the context of families, some of the fundamental challenges people face: How to meet basic needs, how to relate to others, how to manage resources, and how to become responsible members of society. Students will explore adolescent development and will have opportunities to develop interpersonal, decision-making, and practical skills related to daily life. They will learn about the diverse ways in which families function in Canada and will use research skills as they explore topics related to individual and family needs and resources.
HFN2OI Food and Nutrition
This course focuses on guidelines for making nutritious food choices. Students will investigate factors that influence food choices, including beliefs, attitudes, current trends, traditional eating patterns, food-marketing strategies, and individual needs. Students will also explore the environmental impact of a variety of food choices at the local and global level. The course provides students with opportunities to develop food-preparation skills and introduces them to the use of social science research methods in the area of food and nutrition.

HNL2OB (Essential) Clothing (Fast Forward)
Students will explore clothing and fashion design and gain knowledge of clothes and learn the basics of seweing, repairing and upcycling clothes. Students will learn about the functions of clothing, how to enhance their personal wardrobe and develop sustainable shopping strategies.
HHD3OB Dynamics of Family Relationships (Fast Forward)
This course focuses on helping students understand the individual and group factors that contribute to healthy relationships. Students examine the connections between their own self concept and their interpersonal relationships.
HNC3CI Understanding Fashion
Students are introduced to the world of fashion gaining an understanding of theories related to fashion trends and how culture, media, fashion cycles, retailing and social and environmental factors influence fashion and consumer behaviour. Students will develop solid sewing skills in order to create and upcycle clothing.
HPW3CI Working with Infants and Young Children
In this course, students prepare for occupations involving children from birth to six years of age. Students will study theories about child behaviour and development and will have opportunities for research, observations and for practical experiences with young children. Students will become familiar with occupational opportunities and requirements related to working with infants and young children.
HIP4OB Personal Life Management (Fast Forward)
This course focuses on preparing students for living independently and working successfully with others. Students learn how to manage personal resources to meet their basic need for food, clothing and housing. The course emphasizes the achievement of expectations through practical experiences.
HPD4CI Working with School-Age Children and Adolescents
This course prepares students for occupations involving school aged children and youth (6yrs-18 years old). Students will study a variety of theories about child development and will have opportunities for observation and research. It is an appropriate course for students hoping to work with secondary students and youth in the future.
