COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

GRADE 9 COURSES

ENL1WI – This course will enable students to continue to develop the foundational knowledge and skills they need for reading, writing and oral and visual communication. Students will enhance their media literacy and critical thinking skills, and develop transferable skills, including digital literacy. Students will also make connections to their lived experiences and increase their understanding of the importance of language and literacy across the curriculum.

ENL1WW – This course is intended for students preparing to enter the IB Programme. Students will continue to develop the foundational knowledge and skill they need for reading, writing and oral and visual communication. Students will enhance their media literacy and critical thinking skills, and develop transferable skills, including digital literacy. Students will also make connections to their lived experiences and increase their understanding of the improtance of language and literacy across the curriculum.

ENG1LB – In this course, students focus on developing their literacy and communication skills to prepare for success in their daily lives and in the workplace. The course is organized by strands that extend listening and talking skills, reading and writing skills.

GRADE 10 COURSES

ENG2DI – This course is designed to extend the range of oral communication, reading, writing and media literacy skills. The course is intended to prepare students for the grade 11 IB, university or college preparation courses.

ENG2LB – In this course, students focus on extending their literacy and communication skills to prepare for success in their daily lives and in the workplace. The course is organized by strands that extend listening and talking skills, reading and writing skills.

GRADE 11 COURSES

NBE3CI – Understanding Contemporary First Nations, Metis and Inuit Voices – This course explores the themes, forms and stylistic elements of a variety of literacy, informational, graphic, oral, cultural and media text forms emerging from the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit cultures in Canada. Students will focus on the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. The course is intended to prepare students for the contemporary Grade 12 English college preparation course.

NBE3EB – Understanding Contemporary First Nations, Metis and Inuit Voices – This course explores the themes, forms and stylistic elements of a variety of literacy, incformational, graphic, oral, cultural and media text forms emerging from First Nations, Metis, and Inuit cultures in Canada. Students will focus on the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. The course is intended to prepare students for teh compulsory Grade 12 workplace preparation course.

NBE3UI – Understanding Contemporary First Nations, Meti and Inuit Voices. This course explores the themes, forms and stylistic elements of a variety of literacy, informational, graphic, oral, cultural, and media text forms emerging from First Nations, Metis, and Inuit cultures in Canada. Students will focus on the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. The course is intended to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 12 English university or college preparation

NBE3UW – English Literature HL 1 – This course is intended for students in the IB Programme. This course explores the themes, forms and stylistic elements of literature emerging from First Nations, Metis, and Inuit cultures in Canada. Students will demonstrate their oral and written communications skills to fulfill expectations for both OSSD and IB Curricula.

Elective

EMS3OI – English Media Studies emphasizes knowledge and skills that enable students to engage with media communication in the 21st century. This course involves learning how to analyze and create media texts. Students will also learn about responsible media use, digital literacy, and how the media industry impacts our society.

This is an optional English course. It does not count toward the compulsory grade 11 English course. You should sign up for NBE3xx for grade 11 compulsory English.

ENG4CI – The final required step in the college-bound program. Students will focus on the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life.

ENG4EI – An English course for those students who are workplace bound. Students will focus on further developing the literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in the workplace and daily life.

ENG4UI -The final required step in the university-oriented program. Students will focus on the development of literacy, oral and written communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life.

ENG4UW – This is the first of two courses intended for Grade 12 students who are enrolled in the I.B. programme. Students will study a variety of texts in order to practice close analysis of literary technique. They will demonstrate their oral and written communication skills to fulfill expectations for both OSSD and IB Curricula.

ETS4UW – This is the second of two courses intended for Grade 12 students who are enrolled in the I.B. programme. Students will study a variety of poetry, prose and drama in order to practice close analysis of literary technique. They will demonstrate their oral and written communication skills to fulfill expectations for both IB and OSSD Curricula.

Elective

EWC4CI – This course emphasizes knowledge and skills related to the craft of writing. Students will investigate models of effective writing; use a workshop approach to write a variety of works; and make considered decisions for improving the quality of their writing. They will also complete a creative or analytical independent study.
