Final Evaluation & Exam Information 2022-23

The WRDSB has divided its 10 exam/evaluation days so there are 5 such days in each semester:  two days at mid-semester (“instructional support days”) and three days at the end of the semester,  as shown on the secondary school year calendar.  The three days occurring at the end of each semester allow staff to support and administer a variety of final evaluation tasks and determine a grade for students. These days may also allow students a final opportunity to demonstrate their learning.

The Instructional Support Days for the end of Semester One will occur from January 31st to February 2, 2023. In the pandemic, great strides were made to adapt assessment and evaluation practices to meet student needs. This year’s return to a final assessment and evaluation period provides an opportunity to take stock of what we have learned and refine our practices in service of fair and reliable evaluation of student learning aligned with Growing Success.

Teachers have the flexibility to provide a variety of methods for students to demonstrate their growth, and confirm their learning (e.g., performance-based tasks, portfolios, demonstrations, projects, exit interviews, conferences, and exams).  Classroom teachers will clearly communicate what students  need to do on these days.

There will be no field trips, WCSSAA games or practices, and no school events for 5 days prior to the Instructional Support Days.

Final Evaluations:  Some students will be invited to attend in-person on these days in order to complete demonstrations of learning (e.g., performance based tasks, portfolios, demonstrations, projects, exit interviews, conferences)  that are missing or incomplete.

Credit Rescue:  Some students will be invited to attend in-person on these days in order to complete demonstrations of learning necessary to earn their credit.

Exams:  Exams will be administered in select grade 11 and 12 courses only on February 1 or 2.  All exams will be 75 minutes in length (unless otherwise communicated by the teacher).  Students will have up to double time (150 minutes) to complete the exam.  This additional time provision aligns with EQAO testing.

Student Attendance: similar to former exam days, attendance will be taken and submitted for scheduled exams or performance tasks, in-person credit rescue and other in-person final demonstrations of learning.  ACE students will attend school with regular programming January 31- February 2nd.  On February 3, 2023 PA Day, ACE students will not attend school.

School Closure or Bus Cancellation

  –  School buses run on their regular schedule during these days.  Please listen to local radio and

check the school board social media channels/website at wrdsb.ca and the Glenview website

  –  If any WRDSB buses are canceled in any geographic area in Waterloo Region during the

Instructional Supports Days, January 31 to February 2, the evaluation schedule in all secondary

schools will be shifted forward one day (i.e., the assessments/evaluations scheduled for Tuesday,

January 31 would be shifted to Wednesday, February 1; Wednesday February 1 shifts to

Thursday February 2, the PA day on Friday, February 3 does note move, and

assessments/evaluations scheduled for Thursday February 2 shift to Monday, February 6)

  –  The February 3 PD day will not move if there are weather/bussing disruptions or cancellations.
